Last night a little before 9:30pm I took one of the twins on a little walk
to try and get her to sleep, and was surprised to have what sounded like a
BARN OWL fly over and let out a single, distinctive shriek. I live a few
blocks from Hunter Lake Elementary, which isn't exactly the usual habitat I
associate with Barn Owls. I never saw the bird, but heard a single call,
loud and clear.
However, a week or so ago there was a calling Great Horned Owl in the
neighborhood, and it's quite possible the call I heard last night was
actually a Great Horned Owl, and not a barn owl.
For some recordings of these shrieks made by Great Horned Owls, see
I reported the bird as "owl sp." in eBird, but thought I'd pass along the
recordings in case anyone is unfamiliar with those uncommon (but
potentially confusing!) Great Horned Owl calls.
