This morning I saw 5 Hooded Mergansers at Paradise Park (swimming in the pond with the island). As always, the males took my breath away, they are so gorgeous! Also present were 3 Eared Grebes, a handful of Oregon Juncos, a young Black-crowned Night Heron, and the ubiquitous Great-tailed Grackles.
Yesterday at the Boyton Slough (by Mira Loma Park) I saw 6 Long-billed Dowitchers, which I haven't seen there in quite some time. Unfortunately, they were chased off by someone's off-leash dog. There were also several grackles present there, and probably more Gadwalls than I have ever seen.
A few days ago at Cottonwood Park in Sparks, I saw an adult accipiter standing in the river with its legs completely submerged. In the 15 minutes or so that I watched it, it did not bathe or drink--I guess it just wanted to soak its feet! Strangely, this is the 3rd time I have seen an accipter standing in the river at Cottonwood Park. Maybe it was the same bird every time, or else this is a behavior with which I am unfamilar.
