direct from Boonstock, Nevada.....also known as Rancho Recluso, in the general vicinity of beautiful downtown Vya, an avian update. things have gotten considerably more interesting since i was here two weeks ago, on the Day of the Derby......
gray flycatcher (resident....his 5th year here)
mountain bluebird (resident....since forever)
barn swallow (resident for at least 20 years)
western wood peewee
green-tailed towhee (resident....i think)
brewer's sparrow (conservatively, about a million)
zero sage thrashers
zero sage sparrows....sageBRUSH sparrows
as usual.....sage hen free. nobody seems to have told this species that i'm willing to turn this place into a sanctuary for them. the house list is now up to 89.....and the sage grouse is STILL a no-show!

and there is this strange development. this place has been, as far as i know, amphibian-free. it's not much for reptiles, either. very rare to see a snake or a lizard. BUT....last night, a frog was croaking at my little pond. startling. anybody know who this guy is? it's NOT a northern leopard frog...i listened to his call on You Tube and it's not even close. this guy was croaking in a very froggy croak....not a toad......a two note frog croak. fantastic to hear it up here and i hope he finds a mate......
