Rancho San Rafael, Reno, Washoe Co (5/15/14)
All 3 owlets now appear to have fledged (or else to have come to grief in some way). Yesterday, there were 2 nestlings with no sign of the missing one. Today, the nest was completely empty, with a fledgling on a nearby branch but no trace of the other 2 owlets. On both days one of the adults--I couldn't find the other--was in another tree not far off. I spent some time both yesterday and today searching for the missing owlets but with no luck. Assuming all is well--and why shouldn't it be?--they were presumably perched in a willow somewhere near digesting last night's cottontail (or whatever).
Soras. Judging from the whinnies coming from the cattails, there were at least 2 today in the wetlands restoration area a little upstream of Herman's Pond.
