Mark, if you search your memory, I'd bet you've seen snipe standing on fenceposts. If you drive through Sierra Valley early in the morning during summer, they're on every fifth post!
Lots of species of shorebirds like to sing from treetops. We just don't see that sort of behavior very often, because they're usually not broadcasting territoriality at these latitudes. Maybe if we had more black spruce...
