Birded a few areas around Carson City today (Monday, Feb. 10th). During a quick lunch time stop on the west shore of Washoe Lake, a mature Bald Eagle, a Rough-Legged Hawk, and 8 Herring Gulls were observed along with Horned Larks, American Pipits, a Red-Tailed Hawk, a Northern Harrier, two Northern Shovelers, Canada Geese, and California and Ring-Billed Gulls. Most of the shore is now covered in water from the weekend rain limiting the ability to drive much of the shoreline.
At Carson River Park/Silver Saddle Ranch at dusk, a mature Bald Eagle perched on a fence post, two Great Horned Owls and one Western Screech Owl were observed, and a few Bewick's Wrens were singing their beautiful song. The Screech Owl was first heard tooting after dusk and its silhouette was quickly noted in the willows just past the bridge. We were able to get within 20 feet of it as it sat on the end of a branch. Some diffused lighting from my headlamp allowed excellent prolonged looks at it (the one time I leave my camera in the car).
At Riverview Park tonight, three different Great Horned Owls were heard calling under a diffused moonlit night. Please e-mail me for any directions.
