On our way home today (Monday, May 28th) from the long weekend, we briefly stopped at Mason Valley WMA to check on the pair of Osprey. When I was at Mason Valley about a month ago, I observed a pair of Osprey taking sticks to the raised platform by Bass Pond which left me somewhat puzzled as they have nested on the platform (complete with nest) at North Pond for the past 2 years. When I went over to North Pond at that time, I saw that two Great-Horned Owlets were in the old Osprey nest which explained why the Ospreys weren't using it. So today the Osprey pair were observed actively using the platform by Bass Pond with the female sitting on nest with the male next to her when we arrived.
On our way through Wabuska, I saw the silhouettes of a few Common Nighthawks sitting in a tree so we stopped and looked a little closer. We saw at least 40 Nighthawks roosting in the trees and on the railroad tracks (one right next to our vehicle much to our surprise) by the time we counted them and left. The Nighthawks weren't here when we drove through this past Friday so they must have arrived over the weekend.
