Nye County, 4 miles north of Beatty along Highway 95 - Parker Ranch.
All month has been slow compared to April 2010. Last year we had already experienced waves of
dozens of Yellow-rumped warblers, but I have only seen one or two per day and not every day this
year. Last year we had Bullock's orioles, Wilson's warblers, and Orange-crowned warbler by now, but
none this year yet. I have only seen one Yellow warbler on three days in April, much less than April
2010. Empidonax flycatcher numbers and species diversity also seem way down from last year. Last
year I saw Rufous hummingbirds in late April, none yet this year. April 2010 I saw Chipping sparrows
on several days scattered through the month, but none this April.
Cassin's vireo, Common yellowthroat, Blue-gray gnatcatcher, and Yellow-headed blackbird numbers
seem similar to last year, as well as Brown-headed cowbirds (unfortunately). Costa's hummingbird
and Black-chinned hummingbirds have been common this year. Anna's hummingbirds appeared for a
few days in early April both last year and this year.
White-crowned sparrows appear to have left today, right around the average May 1 date each year
when they exit.
