Oxbow Park, Reno, Washoe Co (4/18/11)
There was a good collection of seasonal birds at Oxbow this
morning, including my FOS Vaux’s Swift. Here’s a partial
Wood Duck--1 male (pond)
Turkey Vulture--flock 4 drifting N across the river
Hairy Woodpecker--pair digging a nest or roost cavity in
a big cottonwood snag along the river
Mountain Chickadee--1 (?nest prospecting)
Golden-crowned Sparrow--1 (singing)
I just had a glimpse of the Vaux’s Swift as it flew S
across the river. I see a few Vaux’s Swifts most years
at Oxbow this time of the year (mid-April/early May).
Today’s sighting was unusual in that the swift was by
itself, not with swallows moving along the river as
in past seasons.
