I checked the Ohio River up- and downriver from the Hannibal L&D in
hopes that the Black Scoter would remain, but wasn't able to turn one up in
the 2 hrs I spent there. Maybe next time. I made a brief run to Cheat Lake
as well after getting back in town. The uplake marina section has iced over.
The area viewable from the I-68 bridge seems mostly iced all the way down to
Cheat Haven. I didn't check the Sunset Beach cove. Cheat Lake Park had maybe
50% open water with the other areas very lightly covered. Maybe the clear
skies and above freezing temps the next few days will open a little more up.
Will have to start checking the Mon more regularly now. The ice did seem to
concentrate the birds though and made viewing pretty easy. List as follows
from the park:
Canada Goose - 75
Common Loon - 1
Pied-billed Grebe - 50
Horned Grebe - 10
Bufflehead - 50
Ruddy Duck - 75
Hooded Merganser - 10
Ring-necked Duck - 15
Redhead - 2
Mallard - 25
American Black Duck - 50
American Coot - 10
Best to you all.
