I spent a couple hours this afternoon looking for
migrant shorebirds in western Preston County. Nothing
yet except for the expected Killdeer. The most
notable thing I saw during my brief outing was a mixed
kettle of Turkey and Black Vultures (9 and 2
respectively). I've now seen Black Vultures in this
part of the state during every month of the year. By
no means, however, can they be seen as reliably around
here as in other parts of the state.
I also briefly encountered one of those
"confusing summer warblers." After a minute of trying
to get a clear view of this yellowish bird, the
mystery was solved when it displayed food begging
behavior and was promptly fed by a previously unseen
adult Yellow Warbler.
I also spent some quality time watching an
Eastern Kingbird hunt dragonflies beside a wetland.
Has anyone else noticed an abundance of ticks as
of late? Perhaps I've just been unlucky, but I'm
about to the point where I'm afraid to leave a trail.
