Carson Lake (Greenhead Hunt Club), Fallon (Sheckler Road to Pasture Road):
Went looking for and found the BAIRD'S SANDPIPER (1 hugging the shoreline on
the Holmes pond), LONG-BILLED CURLEW (4) and WHIMBREL (1) in the grassy
field of the Rice pond. That field was also covered with 40+ Great Egrets,
10+ Snowy Egrets, 1 Great Blue Heron and 100+ White-faced Ibis.
Soda Lake, Fallon:
Read Dave Arsenault's note about his trip to Soda Lake. We made a quick
trip late yesterday afternoon and made it to the northwest side of the lake.
Several species of shorebirds and gulls where there. The skeet shooters and
nude sunbathers were absent but a group of 5-10 people were there having a
BBQ, listening to music and riding their jet ski.
In addition to the phalaropes and other common shorebirds we observed two
BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS walking up and down the shoreline on either side of the
human activity. We were able to get close to the birds, follow them for
quite a while and Jane also took some photos. Other species of interest
include the BONOPARTE'S GULL (2) and an apparently lone SNOWY PLOVER.
